  5.     Thirty years ago, Oliver Tambo slipped out of South Africa
  6. to establish an overseas network of the African National
  7. Congress just before the underground movement was crushed at
  8. home. Tambo, president of the A.N.C. since 1967, returned last
  9. week, flying into Johannesburg's Jan Smuts Airport to delirious
  10. shouts of "Tambo, Tambo, Tambo!"

  12.     Though he suffered a stroke 16 months ago, he was able to
  13. give the opening address at the first A.N.C. conference held
  14. inside South Africa in three decades. He surprised many
  15. delegates by calling for a re-evaluation of economic sanctions
  16. against Pretoria. "It is no longer enough," he said, "to repeat
  17. trite slogans." The A.N.C. leadership decided otherwise. The
  18. next day the conference unanimously passed a resolution
  19. rejecting any change in its sanctions policy.
